Google App Engine for iPhone Apps

Details

So... Google and Apple are at war? (https://www.newsfix.ca/2010/02/03/apple-and-google-go-to-war-adobe-takes-collateral-damage/) Let's get them working together by marrying two of their best offspring: the iPhone SDK and Google App Engine.

Jason Cooper on Google App Engine Jason Cooper (https://code.google.com/query/#p=appengine&q=jason%20cooper) is an App Engine expert and is part of Google's App Engine developer relations team. Jason has agreed to to give us a tutorial introduction to App Engine for iPhone apps at our February meetup. As part of his presentation, Jason is building a sample backend for a location-based iPhone app and I'll have a simple iPhone app to go with it; we're planning to make both available as an open source example. Will Google's and Apple's platforms mix? We'll see; as was written of another famous pairing:

"Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night." (William Shakespeare)

To show some of the opportunities that exist with App Engine, Art Kho has agreed to show a run-tracking app built using App Engine, the W3C Geolocation API, and Safari. That's right, it's a web app, and it looks great! Check it out on Art's web site (https://www.beijingbayou.com).

Bonus! Peter Harrington on building iPhone backends with Drupal I had the good fortune of running into Peter Harrington at an Android Developer Lab at Google. As we were catching up, Peter told me that he'd recently given a talk on building iPhone backends with Drupal. Just our luck! I'm eager to hear Peter's overview and introduction of this great backend alternative.

Game Engine Shootout postponed to March Julian Gomez has been working with game engine providers to put together presentations for our next meetup, the "Game Engine Shootout" that we'd originally planned for February, but as he's been doing that we've learned that with GDC in March, it seems that we'll be able to get a broader range of presenters if we postpone our topic until then. (Currently Unity (https://unity3d.com/) and ShiVa (https://www.stonetrip.com/) are confirmed... got contacts at any others? Anyone have experience with cocos2d (https://code.google.com/p/cocos2d-iphone/)?)

More demos, please! I'd like to continue making time at the end of our meetup for two minute demos. If you have one to present, please sign up in the comments below.

For runners out there willing to try my Google appengine app, I would love some feedback. The home page is cloudtabularium.appspot.com.

Thanks!

Hi, my name is Barrie, I did a quick announcement tonight. We're developing a product focussed on the event space, have had a lot of interest. As a team we combine great design with solid web and complex computation capability. If you want to be a part of something great, creating beautifully designed super useful apps, please send me an email or look me up on Linked-in - http://www.linkedin.com/in/barrierobinson
