Our November meetup will be at Facebook, and we'll start with two great presentations about Facebook and iOS.
First, Adam Ernst will talk about Facebook for iOS and its complete rewrite into its current form. Adam is on the iOS engineering team and worked directly on Facebook for iOS and will also share lessons learned and helpful hints for iOS developers who want to develop apps for scale.
Then we'll meet Christine Abernathy, who works on the Mobile Experience & SDK team at Facebook and is responsible for the new Facebook for iOS SDK. She'll do a technical deep dive into the SDK, heavy on code and examples, in order to facilitate a discussion on the philosophy behind the SDKs and how best to build a rich social experience for mobile apps.
After this, Anand Jagannathan will show us the NewzSocial iPad App that he launched last month. Anand describes NewzSocial as "a Socially Curated News Magazine. Think Facebook for news." NewzSocial is tightly integrated with Facebook for authentication, social curation and article sharing, so it will be great to check it out as an example of what independent developers are doing with Facebook services on iOS.
And finally, have you signed up yet for Renaissance (http://renaissance.io)? We're lining up an awesome set of speakers and planning some fantastic events for attendees.

Sorry folks for the NDA mixup and the initial delays. This is something we realized late in the game was a requirement. I had earlier thought the meeting area was an NDA-free zone, but it was not. Again, apologies for the mixup.
4,519 days ago
Yeah.. we had no choice esp. after travelling long distance for this purpose.. otherwise, the event went well..
4,519 days ago
Hi Christine, I missed the 1st presentation but really enjoyed yours. Thanks!
4,518 days ago
Yes, I missed it because it is not advisable for anyone at the event to sign that NDA unless they are FB employee.
4,518 days ago
I missed the entire event because of the NDA requirement that FB imposed, and it was not advisable to sign.

If you didn't have time to come chat. Here is a quick link to take a look at. http://bit.ly/NmQulD
Thanks and it was a great presentation! Excellent job FB!

Tim Burks it was great meeting you. I had an awesome time at Facebook. All 3 speakers did great! I learned a lot. Thanks!

Thanks Christine & Adam for being great hosts. I learned something new about fSDK. Many thanks!

I had to leave early to catch a flight back to Las Vegas. I talked to several people and would like to pose a question to get your thoughts on this:
If you had an iOS Developer reporting to you, what would be the difference between them being a "good" developer or a "Great" developer for you?
I have been getting some really interesting and thoughtful answers. I will share the summary of the answers next week.
So please let me know your thoughts.
The meeting tonight had many nice people attending who were gracious and hospitable. This was my first meeting and I really enjoyed it.
I look forward to attending again.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

Will the slides be available from this evening's Meetup?
4,520 days ago
Only if everyone signs an NDA :)
4,520 days ago
I do not know if everyone signed the NDA or not. I signed it. They got the name on my badge wrong at reception (I am Jim Lola and not Tim Lola). I also do not know how anyone could get in because you had to sign an NDA to get a badge and enter the area.

The NDA sign-in was unexpected -- and delayed the start of the meeting by 30 minutes. I arrived early, but it still took 45 minutes to get in the meeting hall. Perhaps we could have emailed in our digital signature of the non-disclosure agreement, along with our info, and our name tag /lanyard could have been prepared and ready when we arrived at the sign-in table. On the other hand, was all this paperwork really necessary at all? After all, what intellectual property could we have stolen by attending this meeting??? Geez.

Microsoft did this last summer at a similar size meeting, and everything went quite smoothly.
4,519 days ago
I've been to many Microsoft events and never had to sign an NDA.
4,519 days ago
Actually there was no NDA, I just meant they were ready for us since they had our info from Meetup ahead of time. All the name tags were prepared ahead; all we had to do was pick them up and walk in the auditorium.
4,520 days ago
Yikes! Is anyone actually signing them?
4,520 days ago
Some obviously did. I did not as it is not advisable.
4,520 days ago
Signing an NDA without getting paid? No description of the confidential information? No expiration time for a binding legal contract?
Umm, yeah that sounds like something I can't wait to sign!
4,520 days ago
It is ridiculous that Facebook requires an NDA to be executed on the spot to access the event or they won't let you in. Says a lot about the company.
4,520 days ago
Engineers don't understand how dangerous this is. Really there are 500 developers here that don't see themselves advancing in their careers?
4,520 days ago
What a missed opportunity. Imagine if everyone had stood up to FB and Just Said No! I'd better go check my FB account now to make sure it hasn't been deleted...
4,519 days ago
I'd love to see FB or Google attempt to enforce one of these "must sign to enter" NDAs in court. My bet is they would be found unenforceable. They are also superfluous. Laws against trade secret theft and corporate espionage are sufficient to protect these companies' interests.
4,519 days ago
Maybe so, but there no upside to being dragged into court.

7:18 and there is still room for more here.

Work seems to be never ending, especially when you want to get somewhere. Sorry, can't make it this time!
4,520 days ago
Same here.. I have changed my invite RSVP to no. Enjoy the meeting everyone..
4,520 days ago
Unused invitations should go back into the general pool.

Where's the best place to go after the meetup tonight? Antonio's is a bit far from Menlo Park.
4,520 days ago
There's the bar at Four Seasons at University Ave and 101. But for something more downscale, the closest places are probably Old Pro in Palo Alto, or The Oasis on El Camino in Menlo Park.
4,520 days ago
I vote for the four seasons, it's closest to the highway!
4,520 days ago
Whatever I can go in without being 21 Im fine with
4,520 days ago
Because I'm only 16 (so anywhere where I'm allowed)

Hey guys, a seat is available in the car from SFO. Departure : Fillmore street and Eddy street 5:30pm. Anyone interested?
4,520 days ago
Do you have two seats available ?
4,520 days ago
Yes but the last seat is not very large...
4,520 days ago
Hi Sebastien. The seat still available?
4,520 days ago
This is very cool! thanks for putting on this event.
- are there any chances of volunteering for renaissance?
- i'd love to have a technical corner talking tech to people smarter and more experienced than i am in ios dev. anyone interested?
4,520 days ago
hey tim, will this event be video taped? i do recall you were able to get this done on occasion and it would certainly relieve a lot of people of forcing the issue to attend or not.
thanks!
henry
4,520 days ago
Hi Henry, unfortunately no, tonight's event won't be recorded. You must be present to win :) but if there's interest, we might bring part of this back at Renaissance in January.

Hi there, anyone driving down from SF? Would love to carpool.
Thanks!
4,520 days ago
I am going to rent a car from SFO then will drive to FB and back to Downtown. If you want you can join me on the ride to SFO and then I can take u to FB and back to the SF.
4,520 days ago
Hey! A friend of mine join to the event, buy he can't go. I can go with his name? I am on waitlist.
4,521 days ago
To speed up registration, Facebook security asked me for a list of names of people who are coming. If you're using meetup.com with an incomplete name, you'll still be able to get in, but expect a little more effort at the door.
4,521 days ago
I RSVPd weeks ago, but now I get an email saying the event is full and I can join the wait list. What happened?
4,521 days ago
Hi Fabian, sorry to hear that. Unfortunately I don't have visibility into meetup.com's processes, but I can say that I didn't do anything specific to cause this. Also, because Facebook's space is limited, we can only guarantee space to the "yes" RSVP's, but in the past we've always had enough space for everyone on our waitlists.
4,521 days ago
Ok, I see. A colleague of mine got on the attendee list and wants to offer his seat to me, because he can't make it. Possible?
4,522 days ago
Is there a wait list?
4,524 days ago
I'm coming from Argentina and I really would like to join this meetup. A friend of mine has already signup for the event, is there a waiting list or something like that? thanks in advance.
4,525 days ago
I also would like to join the meetup if possible.
4,525 days ago
whoops, missed on signing up last night. tim, let us know if standard protocol in showing up anyways for the 50% flake. thanks!
4,525 days ago
I would like to join this meetup too. Please let me know if there is another spot. thanks.
4,527 days ago
Expecting yet another great meetup, as usual. Kudos to Tim for taking the time/effort to make these happen!
4,532 days ago
Also my first meetup! Very excited!
I have a question: I just appear at the meet up, and show my meetup account? Or I should do something before?
Thank you!!!
4,532 days ago
I would like to registrate another person. Can I cancel my registration? what shold I do?
4,534 days ago
Excited to join my first meetup. Hope to share some user experience tips for iOS devs using https://heatma.ps

This looks like a great event and this will be my first meetup. Really looking forward to this and many more!

I love hearing speakers--is there any opportunity to sit down and just hang out with people hacking out the facebook SDK? i have been learning ioS but haven't gotten so far until now. I'd love to have the oportunity to speak to cool facebook evangelists about common issues that trip up beginning developers with their awesome sdk.
4,527 days ago
@Romy -- its not you, its the Facebook SDK that is to blame for any confusion and frustration.
4,539 days ago
whoa! are there any volunteer opportunities for renaissance? $600 is worth it, but for the indie developers, any possibilities to give back to the community through sweat and labor? =D
