Engineering User Delight, Intuit's Data Platform, and StackMob

Details

For our February meetup, we'll be taking a peek inside Intuit to get some tips and tricks for building great apps for small businesses, and then we'll take a close look at StackMob, which offers some great tools to help us with that.

We'll start with a talk from Intuit's mobile team:

Engineering for User Delight

Why do some apps engender a feeling of delight and craftsmanship? Why do other apps feel bland or boring?

In order to deliver a rich user experience, subtle details can be the most important differentiators in conveying a feeling of overall quality and satisfaction to users. Tyler Fox, iOS software engineer at Intuit, will explore in depth user interface details and interactions that can delight users and help differentiate apps without getting in the way.

Then we'll hear about opportunities for mobile app developers who want to hook up to Intuit APIs:

Leveraging Intuit's Data Platform In Your Applications

Did you know that Intuit is actively supporting an ecosystem of third party applications that solve small business and consumer problems?

Peter Vogel and Tim Hobson, engineers on the Intuit Partner Platform (IPP) team, will discuss the Data Service APIs that Intuit supports, the types of applications that have been successful with them and how you can leverage them in your applications.

After this we're going to go in-depth with StackMob:

Put your Backend on Stackmob

StackMob, a mobile application backend platform, cuts your development time in half by handling all of the backend functionality of your app. From the client you can easily trigger datastore, authentication, push or geo-location operations, just to name a few. Matt Vaznaian, iOS Software Engineer at StackMob, will walk through the features StackMob provides, as well as what it looks like to develop an iOS application which integrates StackMob as the backend.

CocoaConf San Jose Ticket Giveaway

I'll have a free ticket to CocoaConf San Jose (http://cocoaconf.com/sanjose-2013/home) (April 18-20) for one lucky drawing-winner. Bring a business card to enter, and if your card isn't drawn, REGISTER HERE (http://cocoaconf.com/sanjose-2013/register) and use the SVIOS code for a 25% discount.

Great to see so many iOS enthusiasts yesterday evening. I never paid attention to minute core animation details on popups and tap areas. Stackmob is a great concept.

First and last presentations were pretty useful. Nice to see some core animation examples. We will definitely give stackmob a try

All 3 were very useful presentations ; will love to get a hand on the slides.

Also wanted to add a quick note about our newly established Amazon AWS team in Palo Alto. We are building a new product from the ground-up and are looking for entrepreneurial developers/craftsmen who are passionate about start-up opportunities to help build and launch v1 of this stealth-mode initiative!!

Specifically looking for a senior mobile developer with iOS and/or Android experience . If you want to know more connect with me on http://www.linkedin.com/in/himanshukhurana

The meeting was kind of a disappointment, 2 corporate plugs and I only found 1st talk meaningful.

Engineering User Delight was inspiring. StackMob was pretty slick.

Sorry for the late notice, hopefully somebody on the waiting list will be able to go.

Hi all, please grab something to eat before the meetup tonight or plan to go out afterwards. We'll have light snacks and bottled water courtesy of Intuit but nothing heavy. Also, Intuit policy prohibits outside food, so no brown-bagging.

We have a lot of signups! Please join me in thanking Intuit for hosting and accommodating our big group.

I've had something come up, so I can't make it on time :( Hopefully someone on the wait list now can make it.

Tim, I'd like to suggest that you change this group from "manual" waiting list to "automatic" waiting list. "Automatic" will automatically promote whomever is first in line when a spot opens up. Your current "manual" setting sends an email to everyone on the waiting list, with the first to reply getting in.
I, personally, would prefer "automatic" for two reasons:

  1. It matches better the traditional concept of a waiting list.
  2. I have felt a little bit of agitation and annoyment after clicking the link and finding the meetup full after each recent waiting list email.
    Thanks, Bob

Done. That's how I prefer to set things also. Sorry about the misconfiguration.

I'm confused. Did the wait list open up or not? I just got an email but don't see where I can say yes I'm still interested.

I don't know who's idea it was to put a government holiday on a meetup day, but to accommodate Presidents' Day, we've moved the February meetup back a week to Feb. 25th. Sorry for the inconvenience.
