Opening Windows for iOS Developers

Details

Our March meetup will be at Microsoft, and we'll be continuing the discussion that started at Renaissance (http://renaissance.io/stories/embassy), where Microsoft had devices and experts on-site to give us a closeup look at Windows Phone and Windows 8.

This time we'll be at the Microsoft campus in Mountain View and we'll get an overview of Windows Phone and Windows 8 from the Microsoft team, then we'll have presentations from several developers (including me) who've been porting apps from iOS to Windows. We've been asked to be honest, so there will be things that we found difficult or didn't like, but there are also many benefits and things to be learned.

If you haven't had hands-on experience with Windows devices, you'll have a chance at a device bar that will be available, and someone will win a Surface (http://www.microsoft.com/Surface/en-US) in a drawing.

I'll also have another Cocoaconf ticket to give away. Cocoaconf is coming to San Jose (http://cocoaconf.com/sanjose-2013/home) on April 18-20 and is a great opportunity to get some in-depth training on iOS.

Finally, Renaissance session videos are now available (http://renaissance.io/2013). We hired a team to create some really nice session videos which are available by subscription at http://renaissance.io . Watch the videos and check out these photos (https://www.meetup.com/sviphone/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=12344792) to see what everyone has been talking about!

Thanks to Microsoft and the organizers for the great venue and the wonderful food.

I was really impressed by the Windows 8 phone demo. Microsoft has a done a great job with the new aesthetic language: the panorama metaphor, customizable tiles, and the nice, clean minimal look. It seems ironic that Microsoft seems to have taken a page out of Apple's playbook by setting a least-effort standard UI that still looks good.

I think Microsoft presenters today really put their best foot forward with a "foreign" and potentially skeptical audience.

I've never really like any Microsoft products other than their games, but they have certainly upped their game in the mobile space.

It was hilarious! How pretty much everybody in the presentation insisted an xml file compared to xcode's storyboard file.

Well, at least today I know microsoft is "only" 5 years away from reaching the features of xcode.

Before this meeting I thought microsoft did not come out of the 90s yet.

But a storyboard file is essentially the same as an XML file. Visual Studio does let you work visually as well.

I promise not to laugh when you try merging storyboard files.

I actually have pretty decent luck with copy/paste when it comes to moving stuff between storyboards -- if you have enough RAm that is...

Saw enough this evening to drop the priority on my pending Android projects in favor of Windows Mobile. Am an old time Visual Studio user and its has always been one of my favorite IDE's.

Storyboards have a very sane schema, and our team merges them just fine. The only counter intuitive part is that the final section, inferredMetricsTieBreakers, shouldn't be merged, simply remove all of the entries there if its been changed by IB in both commits. XIB/NIBS on the other hand, are not so easy to read.

Looking forward to hearing about Windows Phone and hopefully finding a dev who can build a @BeeLineReader plugin to make reading faster/easier! Re: food, anybody game to get a bite nearby beforehand? Would love to meet folks and start the networking before the event begins. I'm thinking Chipotle at Rengstorff/101

Hello All ,

I am looking to network with fellow developers.

I am launching a new (direct to advertiser) ad boutique and hoping to sign up 50 publishers before launching the service.

Hi, I've attended the last few meetups as a new iOS developer and I can say these meetups have definitely been of benefit to me. It helps to see how experienced developers operate and what's important to them.
