At Evernote: The Evernote SDK, Penultimate Image Processing, and Helios

Details

Continuing the momentum from April, we're piling on the power for our May meetup at Evernote. We'll be meeting at the Evernote HQ in Redwood City and starting early - please aim to arrive by 6 so that we can start talks at 6:30.

First, a word from Evernote:

We encourage everyone to have Evernote Hello setup on their phones. We will be using Hello Connect to do a little experiment.

Now, the talks:

The Evernote Devcup and Evernote Accelerator

Seth Hitchings, VP of platform at Evernote, will start off with a brief overview of some exciting third-party developer programs from Evernote.

Seth Hitchings is the VP of Platform at Evernote, where he leads a team that maintains the web service API used by all of Evernote's apps and helps developers from around the world build great apps that work with Evernote.

The Evernote APIs and SDK for iOS

Then we'll hear about the Evernote APIs and how the Evernote SDK for iOS has evolved. From Evernote:

The Evernote SDK for iOS has added lots of new features that developers can benefit from. With a block-based easy to use API, developers can write great apps that work with the Evernote platform. Also learn about the best practices we follow to maintain open source code.

Mustafa Furniturewala is a Sr. Software Engineer at Evernote, where he maintains the Evernote SDK's and works on some of Evernote's iOS apps. He was previously at Citrix and Klout doing lots of different things from mobile virtualization to audio streaming.

Reducing PNG Size: A Brief Tale of Image Processing

All apps display images, but if yours has to create or manipulate them at the pixel level, a whole new world opens up. Ben Zotto, the creator of Penultimate will recount a unique voyage of discovery: effectively generating 8-bit quantized PNG files on device from full RGBA images to save space. Waypoints may include Core Graphics bitmap contexts, GCD, NEON intrinsics, and using pseudo-3D texture samplers for fast color mapping. Sound like nonsense? Learn some neat tricks, or tell Ben how to do it better.

Ben Zotto is the creator of the best-selling Penultimate for iPad, and is now the Head of Penultimate Products at Evernote, where he leads the company's handwriting applications. He's been working in Cocoa since before @properties. In prior tours of duty he built various parts of Xbox Live, Xbox 360, and Yahoo! Mail.

Building iOS Applications with Helios

Helios is an open-source framework that provides essential backend services for iOS apps, from data synchronization and user accounts to push notifications, in-app purchases, and passbook integration. Mattt Thompson will show us how to get a networked iOS app up-and-running in just a few minutes, using Helios, Core Data, and AFIncrementalStore.

Mattt Thompson is the Mobile Lead at Heroku, and the creator & maintainer of AFNetworking and other popular open-source projects, including Postgres.app & Induction. Mattt also writes about obscure & overlooked parts of Cocoa on NSHipster.

I never thought that an optimization journey could be told as as amusing story, but it was!

Step 2 - should have been call an expert instead of wasting time reinventing the wheel. Most companies waste too much time in areas outside their area of expertise.

Hey people, I work for GoodReads in downtown SF. We just got acquired by Amazon and we are hiring for a bunch of SWE positions (iOS, Android, Ruby). Come see me at the end if you're interested.

I'll be wearing a blue shirt and I look like my picture.

I'll try to make an announcement at the beginning if I catch the right Caltrain tonight. Otherwise, I'll announce at the end.

Also, I could use a ride to RWC Caltrain or downtown MV.

Jeffrey W.

PS. I meant a ride after the event when it might be dark.
