Parse Services, Parse Hosting, and ShowKit at Parse HQ at Facebook (building 18)

Details

Did you know that you can build web sites with Parse?

Parse cofounder James Yu will tell us about Parse Hosting (https://www.parse.com/products/hosting), a new service from Parse that allows us to build and run web sites on the same infrastructure that supports the Parse API. Build your web site with the Express (http://expressjs.com) Javascript framework and use Parse's server-side Javascript APIs to integrate the same data that you collect and manage with the Parse API in your app.

For background, we'll also get an overview of all of Parse's powerful features (https://www.parse.com/products) for backend data management.

Then we'll hear more about ShowKit (http://www.showkit.com), the gesture sharing and videoconferencing SDK that we saw briefly at June's WWDC Afterparty. I've personally tried it, and in less than two hours was able to completely come up to speed on the ShowKit SDK and integrate it with Revolve Robotics Kubi to make the app shown here (http://blog.showkit.com/post/53318608567/wwdc-afterparty-with-ios-developers-meetup). If you've every wanted to integrate video in your app, this is a must-see, and that's just one feature in the ShowKit toolkit.

Thanks to the Facebook acquisition of Parse, we're able to meet at the Facebook campus in Menlo Park. You'll recall from last November that there was an NDA required to attend. Please work with us on this. Also, Facebook security (along with many of our other hosts) asks us for a list of attendees prior to the meetup, so you can do everyone a favor and expedite checkins by registering for meetups using your full name.

Thanks and see you at Parse!

I am not local to SV, and I flew out specifically to go to this meetup since I am a fan of the Parse service. They make my life easier. I enjoyed the presentations and the hospitality shown by the personnel. The NDA signing was probably just company policy, and it was a trifling to do (much ado about nothing). This was just my second attendance, the first being about 2-3 years ago. Tim should be congratulated on an organizational job well done. His efforts are appreciated, even from a distance.

Thanks for arranging this Tim. I really like Parse and the way they're going. I thought their presentations were concise, to the point, with a bit of Node/Express education added :)

I'mNot too impressed with Facebook's childish need for NDAs - have gone through the whole debate in another meetup hosted there. Perhaps the way around it is to find a different venue in the future.

Don't follow Apple Maps! The address will put you on Willow near Middlefield. The campus is east of that by the Bay.

I made the same mistake!

There are still people out there that use Apple maps?

Hi everyone, just to avoid confusion, I'll ask each speaker to confirm that their presentation is nonconfidential - which as Bear and I have both asserted, you can expect to be the case.

For those of you not coming to Facebook tonight because of the NDA or otherwise--come join the ShowKit team for drinks after! Antonio's Nut House
321 S California Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94306

I'm guessing we'll get there between 9:30 and 10pm.

And for those of you who will be at the Meetup, come for drinks too!

@Tim @Bear, for people commuting from out of town even from SF, can you please put down the agenda in detail. I don't want to leave early and get stuck in the traffic just to attend Networking, What time is the 1st TALK STARTING?

John S.

I am happy to sign the NDA, but only after making one small change to it. I am going to insert the word "Facebook" before the phrase "confidential information." I can't imagine anyone will have a problem with that. However, it would be helpful if each presenter specially said none of their information is confidential.

Thanks for flagging the NDA issue, fellow commenters! Here's a little legal background regarding the broad and undefined terms used in the NDA.

Many terms (including "confidential") are not defined in the agreement. This is actually helpful, as contracts of adhesion (no ability to negotiate) are generally construed against the drafter (California Civil Code §1654: "In cases of uncertainty ... the language of a contract should be interpreted most strongly against the party who caused the uncertainty to exist").

This means that ambiguities in the agreement would be construed against FB, and in favor of the signing party (you). So it would be harder for FB to successfully sue you under the NDA, which makes it less likely that they'd try in the first place.

That said, it's still perfectly rational not to attend if you want to protest the use of hard-to-interpret NDAs—even if they're more bark than bite.

Nick L.

Glad to be helpful—feel free to reach out in future if you have quickie legalese questions!

Thanks for the info, it's good to know. But that NDA still makes it prohibitive for me to go. I don't think FB should even offer to host a public event if they're going to require this. And using "standard practice" as a justification just makes them look dumb.

What time is the actual Talks going to start at?

Tim B.

4,282 days ago

Typically 7pm (see meetup notes) but we might start as late as 7:15 if people have trouble signing in.

Just read the NDA aloud to my workmates. They laughed at it. Not going.

Am keenly interested in Showkit; have worked with a MD pioneer in Telehealth and spent several hundred hours in researching how a Dr can remotely a remote control a medical iPad. Am probably the ideal audience. Now am not going.

Hey Warren, sorry to hear you won't make it. I'm with ShowKit and will be there tonight--send me an email and we can share the presentation with you. emily@showkit.com And you can get access to the SDK now as part of our private beta: www.showkit.com Hopefully we'll get to see you at the next event!

Nick L.

Looks like FB (Bear Douglas, below) has disclaimed the possibility that "confidential" info would be discussed at the talk. I've also posted a very brief summary (above) of how NDAs actually work, and why this NDA isn't such a big deal. Hope you can make it out tonight!

Warren S.

4,282 days ago

@Emily, thanks; will contact offline. @Nick, VCs require a copy of all signed agreements - this one makes the signer look naive. Anything that offers lawyers more leverage over you without offering any value in return is a big deal.

@warren, interesting point. I assume they only require corporate contracts, not personal ones like your apartment rental agreement, student loan notes, etc. If you attend the event as an individual, would this help? It's hard to draw the line between personal and business.

Warren S.

@nick, it is very easy to draw a line: a NDA which covers technology that may or may not be incorporated into a commercial product and has a signatory with company name is not - and I repeat in all caps for emphasis - IS NOT LIKE A PERSONAL RENTAL AGREEMENT. To suggest otherwise is misleading.

Moreover, a presenter claiming, in this thread, that nothing confidential will be disclosed, does not a guarantee that some other party from suing in the future. Said party may not have read this thread, but has seen a name in a list of signatories to a NDA. Said NDA may be attached to a presentation that may be associated to some future IP that they are litigating. Discovery costs money. Interrogatives waste time. The result is that lawyers from both sides bill more time, leaving less cash for engineers. So no, I find it very easy to draw a line. The easiest solution is, as John Brewer suggests: no NDAs.

Nick L.

4,282 days ago

@warren, I suggested that one might attend in his individual capacity, not as an employee or owner of a company. So there would be no company signatory in that case. But there's no point scuffling over hypothetical situations now, as the event has passed.

As I mentioned in my original post, it is perfectly rational for you to boycott the meetup in order to express displeasure with FB's NDA policy, and I hope you had a productive evening. (I sure did!) FWIW, FB actually presented us with a different—and much more detailed—NDA when we arrived, but after I talked with them they agreed to use the simpler NDA that had been posted.

Ken M.

4,282 days ago

I don't want to sign that NDA, so I won't attend.

Warren S.

4,282 days ago

Is 7 when the presentations start? I missed out on the one Evernote presentation (last May) assuming that the first half hour is for settle-in. The clear description of "show up a half hour early" didn't make into the Meetup subscribed calendar.

BTW, Kubi is awesome!

Tim B.

Talks won't start until 7 or later - but yes, please arrive by 6:30 to get settled.

Parse looks really interesting, and I'd love to attend. But I agree with others. The NDA needs to be provided up front (ie. before the meeting) and should specify exactly what we're expected to not disclose.

Tim B.

4,284 days ago

Facebook offered to preprint badges for attendees if we provide full names and email addresses. Here's a form for that. Please add your information by the end of day (midnight) Sunday. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Is there any sort of waiting list I can get on? It looks like there may be a couple people not interested in attending due to need to sign an NDA? I have no problem with that.

Tim B.

4,296 days ago

I've talked with them about this. I'll post more details about an NDA as I know them.

Bear D.

4,296 days ago

Hi John, we do have to ask that everyone coming on site sign the site visitor NDA. It's fairly straightforward, and exists mostly to protect against the case where someone sees or overhears something confidential while on campus. The things we'll be covering at the meetup are not confidential. I'm happy to answer any questions about it. You can see the text here: http://files.meetup.com/1285270/Facebook%20Site%20Visitor%20NDA.pdf

Scott G.

4,296 days ago

We really don't need nor want an NDA to listen to a presentation. Unfortunately because you are requiring one, I also wont be attending.

Gregory S.

4,296 days ago

I guess many people are concerned about wait time to sign NDA. Will it be possible to sign it in advance and bring it to the meetup to reduce the wait time and queue?

John B.

4,296 days ago

I'm flat out never signing an NDA to attend a public meeting. It's completely unprofessional, and symptomatic of Facebook's overall disdain for its users.

Bear D.

4,296 days ago

@Gregory, I'll ask about printing and signing in advance. @John, I'm really sorry you won't be joining us. As much as we'd love to waive it, the NDA is required for any visit to campus.

Nick L.

4,282 days ago
