Realm: the mobile database we've always wanted? Live from Blue Jeans Network!

Details

Have you tried Realm (http://realm.io)? I have, and I think it's pretty cool. Realm is a new open source database designed for mobile apps, and it's a nice replacement for Core Data and SQLite. Check it out and plan to join us to talk about it in September.

We'll be meeting at Blue Jeans Network (https://bluejeans.com), creators of some incredibly versatile video conferencing software and apps, and since Blue Jeans is so well equipped for it, this month we'll be streaming live over the Blue Jeans Network! We'll also hear from Luke Ma, head of mobile engineering, about some cool things they have done for an upcoming app.

Sign up if you plan to join us in person, and stay tuned for information about our live video feed.

Looking for a talented iOS developer to join an exciting LA-based startup. We belong to the collaborative consumption or "sharing" space. I'll be at the next event and would love to chat with anybody who might be interested. Otherwise, feel free to ping me here.

The keyboard extension that we showed at the start of the meetup is approved (wow!) and in the App Store.

Here's the video that we showed:

Is the swift API out yet?

The old Swift API still works but the new API has not been released yet. (The Android launch and some CI stuff has kept us busy.) The latest info on our progress re: a new Swift API is here: https://github.com/realm/realm-cocoa/pull/889

The meetup was held at BlueJeansNetwork office in Mountain View.

The meeting was tele-linked from several locations, Tim Anglade explained the advantages of RealmDB over the more conventional SQLite, also as the possible replacement for CORE data. It should be low-footprint, thread-safe database, another interesting claim is memory-efficiency, due to its store-on-device nature, the latency and server costs would be greatly reduced too. Tim seemed to know the stuff well, answered most if all the questions with precision.

The second part of the meetup was automated testing by Luke Ma ( ?), I was a bit surprised because this topic was not listed on the meetup agenda. Luke showed his automated testing materials with well prepared slides, that was a nice little gem.

Thanks to Blue Jeans Network, the staff were very enthusiastic, many people joined the mingling before the presentation.

One tiny bit: I wish there were name tags to use, it would have madethe socializing a bit easier.

I would love to use Realm but still uncertain on how to synch it with backend server like AWS to share data.

Hi! For now there are two main ways: 1) use a REST API (or really any API) — just like you would if you used Core Data or FMDB, etc. 2) You can just ship the .realm file from S3 to your device’s filesystem or vice-versa. We are working on sync to provide a third alternative.

And this link would be 1) way: http://realm.io/docs/cocoa/0.85.0/#rest-apis

Is your iOS8 app submitted? If you've done something with any of the new capabilities (I've got a keyboard extension, for example), bring it and tell us about it!

In addition to the live stream, will meetup-video be available, later?

It'd be cool to start collecting a SoftwareDev-92 meetup video archive! :)

That would be a lot of video! I think Blue Jeans is planning to archive this one.
