Apple TV Power-On!

Details

Did you get an Apple TV developer kit? I did, and from what I've seen so far, this new platform is going to be big - and I don't just mean 1080p! I expect to see least as much demand for Apple TV apps as we saw for the iPad when it first appeared.

We've been waiting to talk about tvOS until the hardware is released, and we're counting on Apple to keep its October ship date so we can have our first tvOS meetup on the first Tuesday in November.

Coursera will be our host, and as you might guess, Coursera has been reimagining the learning experience for the big screens of tvOS. They'll share some of their experiences with the product considerations, benefits, and challenges of porting an iOS application to tvOS. We'll also look into the technology of the Focus Engine, TVML, and more as we talk about our early experiences. And as always, there will be apps!

Topics

Coursera: A demo of a learning experience reimagined for tvOS: the product considerations, benefits, and challenges of porting an iOS application to tvOS.

Ethan Fan: TrackMyFitness (https://medium.com/@ethanyfan/trackmyfitness-the-only-apple-tv-fitness-app-that-track-your-reps-a0cbb341ac7e#.mr0yeqfy9) - an Apple TV app to auto count your reps by holding your remote using the accelerometer and gyroscope inside the remote.

Aleksey Novicov: Yodel Solitaire and an in-depth look at the Focus Engine

Poojan Jhaveri: Spark Viewer, an Apple TV companion app to the award-winning Spark Camera iOS app. Watch the best user-submitted Spark Festival videos from around the world along with your own Shared Sparks.

Josh Michaels: Magic Window: a set of Apple TV apps that present beautiful time-lapse scenes. http://jetsoncreative.com/appletv/

p.s. Note the early start time! We'll open at 6 and start talks at 6:30. Also, this meetup is on a Tuesday!

Also: because we'll be meeting in the Coursera offices, our hosts there have asked everyone attending to sign this NDA (https://app.waiverforever.com/pending/3jUCIBrzC41420746420) which covers any Coursera proprietary information that we might see during our visit. This NDA does not cover the contents of Coursera's meetup presentations!

For those who were asking for slides for the first talk, please go to http://www.slideshare.net/alekseyn/developing-for-apple-tv. And be sure to download Yodel Solitaire from the App Store!

I was on the waiting list and a spot opened up so I my status was changed to confirmed. I won't be getting there in time so I hope someone else can get in instead.

I'd really appreciate it if I could watch the presentation as a live stream on my new Apple TV.

If someone is not willing to sign an NDA can you change your RSVPs? There are 69 people in a waiting list, I am sure that some of them are ready to sign NDA.

There is absolutely no reason to have an NDA for this meetup. As written it includes all of the information in Coursera's presentation as being covered. Please read about NDAs. http://savvyapps.com/blog/ndas-a-manifesto-for-app-developers

Yeah NDA for a meetup is strange.

Sorry about the inconvenience. Unfortunately, hosts occasionally insist on NDAs regardless of my preference. I've clarified that the presentation is not under the NDA and we can ask for that to be repeated at the start of the presentation. But let's be gracious guests.

I got one, and am working on porting my recently released game ( www.worfc.com ). It's interesting to me how so much "just works", yet there are so many challenges (missing views & controls, new UX with no touch, etc.)

Then there's the whole "guess how things for tvOS will be priced" issue -- more like desktop? More like iPad? Probably not as high as "console", but maybe? Will it start higher and then race to the bottom? Will 99% of successful apps be freemium, like on phone?

Lots of Qs!

"Farmers Only doth Robot Odyssey"? Love the idea! BIG FAN of the original R.O. here. Tried WoRFC couple of weeks ago but gave up soon, couldn't make sense of some items. Keep up the good work though!

Sorry you had trouble. If you want to email me, I'd be happy to talk about it; I'm always looking for ways to improve!

Not sure when you got it, but there have bee v1.1, 1.2 and now 1.3 updates, each making the new-user experience a little bit better.

Thanks again! :)

(And, yeah, Robot Odyssey was totally awesome! :) )

I have an app to show for tvOS. Not super fancy. But something we did as an extension to our existing app. Can talk a bit about how we used Focus Engine and Top Shelf Extension.

Sorry, we're unfortunately at capacity for this week's meetup. I'll work to get bigger rooms for future tvOS meetups!

Long time CE guy. Very excited to see the announcement of tvOS. It will open up new worlds and opps for us all. Who else out there is excited and wants to discuss how we can make this happen?
